Take your dog to a clean, safe dog park in any weather, commune with a cat or kitten, and enjoy a beverage or snack at the same time!
Project Description
- We would like to expand our current model of providing excellent care for our daycare and boarding clients. We need a larger space to better serve the pet owners of La Plata County. We would also like to add an indoor/outdoor dog park for public access. This dog park area will also include a snack bar for the humans.
- The public dog park in our area is huge, but not supervised at all, not fenced, and many people do not manage their dogs or pick up their dog's waste. At our park we will require that people show proof of immunization, monitor their dog's behavior, and pick up their waste. All dogs over 10 months old must be spayed or neutered. There will be a separate area for smaller dogs. We will provide a trained staff member to oversee the park, answer questions, and discuss behavioral cues that some dogs might show while at our facility. The dog park dogs will not mix with the daycare clients.
- La Plata County has a population of 56,000 people. There are approximately 650 registered dogs in the county. When you factor in the percentage of households that own dogs nation wide (38%), that number is most likely well over 1,000 dogs.
- La Plata county has a huge dog park and many wonderful trails. But some dogs need a fenced area to play in, and their owners want the security of knowing the other dogs are vaccinated and more closely monitored. We can also have some cold wet days where the parks and trails become impassible. An indoor/outdoor park with a durable surface will allow people to exercise and socialize their dogs in a more comfortable environment. They can also grab a cup of coffee or a snack (possibly a beer or glass of wine in the future) while playing with their dog. We will also provide self service dog washing stations.
- We would like to buy a property in Bodo Park which is in the Durango city limits and centrally located for easy access. The building is 4,800 square feet and there is 3/4 of an acre for play yards and parking. The property and renovations will cost approximately $1,300,000. We have most of this money in cash and a pre approved bank loan. We just need a bit more to make our dream a reality and provide La Plata County with a wonderful facility.
- I created and have been the owner/manager of Healthy Hounds & Fat Cats for 17 years. We have a core group of three employees who have been with us for several years. This includes our daycare manager/trainer who has been with us for 7 years, an assistant manager of 4 years, and our groomer of 6 years. We have 4 more employees who have been with us for a year or less, and will be hiring and training 4-5 more people.

What will my money be used for? It will be used to purchase the building, add insulation and remodel it, and to add two self service dog wash stations.
Will you offer training classes? No, but our experienced staff is happy to discuss what certain behaviors and postures might mean, and to help you interpret your dog's actions.
My small dog is afraid of big dogs. Can we still come? Yes! We will have at least 2 separate areas so we can find the right place for your pup to feel comfortable and safe.
When will you open? We plan on taking possession in early February 2023. We hope to have the remodel done 6 weeks after that.
Do I have to stay with my dog? That depends- for the dog park, yes. This is a place for you and your dog to have fun together while also playing with other dogs. We also offer daycare and overnight boarding for families who need someone else to watch their dog while they are at work or doing activities where they can't bring their dog.
What vaccinations do you require? For both the dog park and daycare/boarding we require proof or Distemper, Rabies, and Bordetella. All shots should be administered a week before your first visit. Puppies can wait until about 4 months of age before getting their rabies vaccination but still come to play.
How old does my puppy have to be to come? They need to have their first two Distemper shots and Bordetella. Properly vaccinated puppies can come to daycare starting at 12 weeks old. Puppies coming to the park must be vaccinated and at least 16 weeks old.
Does my dog need to be spayed or neutered? All dogs over 10 months old must be spayed or neutered to visit our facility, although we reserve the right to ask younger intact dogs to leave depending on their behavior and other dogs' reactions to them. Females younger than that who are in heat cannot come.
Do you have WiFi? No, because this is a place for you to spend quality time with your dog. We ask that you monitor and interact with them. We also ask that you keep cell phone usage to a minimum.
