• What is the mission of your company or project?

Our mission is to break cycles of desperation and hopelessness by creating new beginnings. We help people reach their highest potential and to contribute to the well-being of others. We desire for every person to be housed, healthy, and whole.

• Describe the problem you are solving. 

Be Light Candle serves a rural region locally and a highly impoverished area in Africa. We attack the barriers of homelessness, hunger, and hurt. Over 90% of the persons we serve are black women who need resourcing to secure housing with the goal of creating true stability for their families. This is the result of black girls encountering racial and gender-based stereotypes from every direction of their lives without receiving insight on how to best navigate the process. 

Through providing support, mentorship, and guidance for little black girls that shape a healthy and positive identity, our organization is able to properly prepare them for interactions with others in school, work, and society. They will become confident in their capabilities and challenged to change the narrative.

• What is your company/product about and how does it solve the problem? 

Be Light Candle offers high quality, hand-crafted and poured, soy candles for a cause! Our cause is change. We desire to see lives transformed and hope awakened through love that transcends differences and light that penetrates darkness. Every dollar of profit created through Be Light Candle is used for mission purposes!

• Why are you seeking funding and how will you spend the funding?

Be Light Candles approach to positively impact the lives of and narrow opportunity gaps of black women and girls requires that we think regionally, act locally, and impact globally. We focus on resource counseling, people development, and case management services to help black women and girls achieve holistic wellness. We offer accountability, guidance, and community connections. 

We are seeking funding because our areas of services and support include transitional housing, life skills training, goal setting, career readiness, and financial literacy. We address food insecurity, wellness, instability, education, poverty, as well as behavioral health. 

• Who is on your team? 

Be Light Candles founder is a black woman who intentionally and strategically incorporates the perspectives of other women and girls into the decision-making process.

Be Light Candle is deeply integrated into the community and collaborates with several other non-profit agencies in the community. Through these connections, relationships have been forged with other women leaders to ensure diversity of thought and inclusion for various perspectives.
