About Our Founder and Company

Diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at 13, our founder Yolanda “Lana” Jackson was quickly confronted with the reality of what it meant to navigate the health industry complex in a Black, female body. Growing up in hospitals and navigating chronic illness she began to experience how Black women, especially women of color, are constantly gas-lit about their health and left out of conversations in the wellness industry, despite being disproportionately affected by racial trauma and a lack of attention in healthcare. Leveraging functional medicine and nutritional supplementation she healed herself of Crohn’s Disease and no longer struggles with autoimmunity. 

Inspired by her own healing journey and experiences, she founded Browne Wellness as an entirely new category of wellness for Black and Brown women  that supports and nurtures their female bodies and makes functional wellness and plant medicine easy to integrate into their lives. As a result of spending 23 years caring for her chronic illness, the Chief Executive Officer has been in this industry for more than two decades. There is a track record of knowledge and experience she has gained navigating healthcare and learning to heal her body naturally. Ms. Jackson has become a very courageous seeker for her healing and desires to inspire and lead others in wellness conversations collectively. 

She also has professional experience in business management, finance, marketing, customer acquisition, administration, customer service, sales, and consulting through her career in finance and business management for over a decade with the federal government as a Senior Financial Analyst, managing a multi-million program for the Department of Defense. Ms. Jackson brings the business skills and life experience needed to run a wellness supplement company, and she also has confidence, flexibility, optimism, and creativity to inspire a new generation of women. In fact, Ms. Jackson's expertise expands beyond finance and wellness and into the arts. 

As a multi-hyphenate creative, she is also a writer, producer, and co-founder of Lalene Studios, where she is developing Black Fashion Files™, a first-of-its-kind docuseries and platform that showcases emerging and existing Black fashion designers and launches them into the mainstream. The series is a collision of fashion and culture that explores themes like retail activism, conscious consumerism, modern Black history, and Black entrepreneurship.  She also holds degrees in Product Development from the Fashion Institute of Design in L.A. and Art History from American University in D.C. In her early career she also worked in fundraising, development and curatorial research for The Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian, and Ford's Theatre. 

As a result, she can handle both short-term and long-term challenges experienced by the company effectively, which are crucial self-employment traits that also require perseverance and courage. Her varied career experiences and business acumen demonstrates the breadth of her intelligence, communication talents, and passion for serving her community as an activist and advocate for Black lives and liberation, making her well-positioned for global impact with both of her business endeavors.

A Word From Our Founder 

Functional mushrooms and adaptogenic herbs played a crucial role in healing my body of Crohn’s Disease so they have a special place in my heart. After years of being in and out of hospitals, working in high-intensity environments while managing a chronic condition, it was really important for me to regulate my nervous system and my body’s response to stress. To do this, everyday I began taking Ashwagandha, a stress adaptogen–so it was super important for me to have that in our product arsenal. 

Stress is a huge factor for women of color, as the rising demands of post-modern life mean we need daily stress support, because stress is often the starting point of illness. Functional mushrooms have also been key in helping me to heal leaky gut symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation and fatigue. 

Mushroom-stacking or layering mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, and Cordyceps into my diet and supplement routine helped repair and protect my stomach lining, inhibit the growth of bacteria I had in my gut like H. pylori (a bacteria that left untreated can lead to stomach cancer), and reduce the amount inflammation I was experiencing to prevent further tissue damage I had in my gastrointestinal tract. 

But it was important to make functional mushrooms super easy to integrate, as I hated having to swallow so many capsules that my naturopathic doctor had recommended on my journey to healing. So our product line also includes options like the Microbiome Wellness Powder, made from Birch Chaga Mushrooms that can easily be added into smoothies with our Vegan Protein Powder.
