Project Description

Mission-Driven Tech is a women's health company dedicated to the transformation of gynecologic cancer care with modern technology.

Our Team:

Co-Founders Dr. Onyinye Balogun, a Weill Cornell Medicine Radiation Oncologist, and Eve McDavid, a Cervical Cancer survivor and former Google executive leverage the partnership they built during the successful treatment of Eve's diagnosis in 2020. Together they bring a provider:patient point-of-view to solve critical unmet needs in women's cancer treatment.

We leverage our extensive professional networks of industry leading subject matter experts to support our product development work.

The Problem:

More than 1 million women are diagnosed with Cervical and Uterine cancers globally, and an additional 400,000 will die.

The majority of these cases can be cured with powerful internal radiation procedures known as Brachytherapy. Brachytherapy delivers a high, targeted dose of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue and critical organs. Patients who receive Brachytherapy have +94% 5-year survival rates compared to those who do not.

However, in US alone, only half of eligible women access Brachytherapy due to logistical, financial and systemic health system inequities; Black women access Brachytherapy at half the rates of white women.

The fortunate women who do endure numerous painful and traumatizing gynecologic procedures conducted with rigid, inflexible medical devices that were designed in the early 1970s, 20 years before women's inclusion in clinical trials.

As a result:

  • Complications are common and delay time-sensitive care: e.g. uterine perforation, vaginal lacerations
  • 40%+ of patients experience procedure-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Survivors experience diminished physical, mental and sexual health quality of life outcomes

This is well-documented in medical literature: women are quoted that they'd rather die from cancer than continue Brachytherapy treatments.

And they do.  As many as 25% of women who begin treatment drop out due to procedure pain and trauma

It's time for change. Women and physicians deserve better.

The Solution:

Mission-Driven Tech is developing The Blossom*: the first female-fitted gynecologic Brachytherapy medical device designed to improve procedure safety, reduce pain and trauma and improve quality of life outcomes for survivors.

*International Patent Filed May 2023

We're seeking $250,000 in funding to support our medical device prototype engineering efforts and treatment curriculum creation.

The Campaign FAQs

Why did you create Mission-Driven Tech?

Co-Founders Dr. Balogun & Eve McDavid launched Mission-Driven Tech in 2022 after identifying critical unmet needs in today’s treatment for Cervical and Uterine cancers. Gynecologic Brachytherapy (internal radiation) procedures today are painful and traumatizing, producing an unnecessary barrier for women to complete treatment that can cure their cancers. Realizing that pain and trauma stemmed from the medical devices that haven’t been modernized since the 1970s, they put their clinical and technology backgrounds together to redesign the medical devices to properly fit the female body, improving procedure safety and patient outcomes.

How is The Blossom different from the tools used today in Brachytherapy?

Today’s Brachytherapy tools were designed in the 1970s, two decades before women’s inclusion in clinical trials. They are rigid, inflexible and ill-fitting, forcing physicians to make compromises in their care to get the medical devices to fit in order to perform Brachytherapy procedures.

The Blossom is designed to be adaptable, flexible and adjustable to properly fit the female anatomy. Further, The Blossom incorporates modern engineering features in use in other fields of medicine to reduce common complications that occur in care today, like uterine perforation, vaginal lacerations and a painful, traumatic insertion and removal experience.

What has Mission-Driven Tech's progress been to date?

Dr. Balogun and Eve have made significant progress in research and development over the last 18 months. They have

How does Mission-Driven Tech support the global Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative?

The World Health Organization established the Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative in 2018. All 194 member nations voted to adopt the initiative, which establishes targets to attain in Prevention (90% coverage), Screening (70% coverage) & Treatment (90% coverage) by 2030 to eliminate Cervical Cancer in the next century.

Mission-Driven Tech supports the global initiative by developing innovative solutions under the Treatment pillar so more patients eligible for Brachytherapy can access the lifesaving procedures. And, for those who are able to access Brachytherapy, Mission-Driven Tech is improving the patient experience so they’re more likely to complete prescribed treatments on-time with an improved quality of life after care.

What will the capital raised in this campaign be used for?

Capital raised from this campaign will fund The Blossom prototype development, testing and video curriculum development to better support patients through and after treatment.
