Project Description
Beauty by Melanin is an online beauty store that highlights and sells cosmetics made by women of color. When surveyed only 28% of women own makeup from Black-owned cosmetic lines. Out of that 28% of women, only 8% own 4-6 products. The truth of the matter is that even though women of color spend nine times more than the average woman on Beauty products, we only get about 10% of the shelf space. Often the products are not made with our diverse skin tones in mind. Beauty by Melanin’s main is goal is to become the one-stop-shop for all thing’s beauty for women of color. With our virtual shelf space being 100% black-owned cosmetic brands, you can rest assured that all the products were made with our varying skin tones and needs in mind. Beauty by Melanin was created for women of color to shop at ease while also supporting black-owned cosmetic brands.
I started Beauty by Melanin after feelings that many of the products I used were not pigmented enough for my darker skin tone. I often felt discouraged and frustrated that I was spending money on products that did not show up on my skin correctly. Once I found black owned cosmetic companies I realized that all of their products were rich and pigmented. I wanted to make it easier for women like me to find makeup, I believe that Makeup should be a confidence booster and should not promote a lower self-image because certain products aren’t made for all skin types.
We are looking to raise $15,000 to bring more cosmetic companies on the site including a company that sells foundations for a wide variety of skin tones.
