Founded by Ariel Gough and Edwina Govindsamy in 2018, Bailly Cosmetics Inc. is a BIPOC-owned fragrance company with a mission to create scented products that make a positive impact on the world. The company creates an affordable line of cruelty-free and vegan fragrances made with natural and safe synthetic ingredients.
Our Story
When Edwina's mother introduced the pair, Ariel and Edwina knew that they wanted to work together. Ariel had a particular interest in fragrance because her mother suffers from a severe fragrance sensitivity and she witnessed firsthand the negative impact that fragrance can have on a person's health, such as nausea, headaches, and difficulty breathing. Like her, Edwina is also a cosmetics enthusiast and, considering the evidence of the harmful ingredients in some of the most popular perfumes, they committed to starting a business that changed that reality.
In 2018, Bailly Fragrance was launched with the mission to offer scents that are free of potentially harmful ingredients. Their first line of fragrances was coconut oil-based, which helped to create a soft, non-irritating scent. They committed to products free of alcohol, parabens, and phthalates and ensured they were cruelty-free and vegan. Bailly has been featured in Elle Canada, Flare, The Kit, Refinery29, Into The Gloss, and more. Their products are currently available in Canada and the United States at www.bailly.co.
Why We're Crowdfunding
The amount of venture or angel funding received by Black women-led startups since 2009 is still just .0006% of the $424.7 billion in total tech venture funding raised in the same period. Bailly is turning to crowdfunding to overcome major systemic barriers to funding for women in business and specifically women of colour.
Here are our next steps:
1. Research & Development: We have some exciting approaches for how to take our fragrances to the next level and separate ourselves within a saturated market in terms of ingredient transparency and wellness benefits.
2. Commercialization: Getting our products into retail stores means investing in retail readiness, including packaging, barcodes, distribution assistance, and marketing.
3. Certification: In order to ensure that our products are safe and can be easily identified, we want to manufacture products that have been rigorously tested to ensure you have the best quality.

What will happen if you do not reach your funding goal?
If the funding goal is not reached, we will still be able to provide the rewards to our backers and we will continue to self-fund or explore other financing options.
Are donations made in Canadian dollars (CAD)?
Please be mindful that donation amounts entered and shown on iFundWomen are in U.S. dollars (USD).
What if I cannot financially afford to contribute?
While monetary contributions are preferred at this time, you can still help out the campaign by spreading awareness! Share this company with any friends and family members who might be interested in donating or purchasing a reward. You can also follow Bailly Fragrance on Instagram and Facebook.
Is my contribution tax-deductible?
No, your donation is greatly appreciated and will help us to achieve our business goals, but we are not a registered charity and cannot provide tax receipts.
What if I would like to contribute more money but am interested in a particular reward?
There is an option to donate an open value amount (see homepage). You can always purchase a specific reward and then add on any additional amount through the open value reward.
What if I want to give my reward to someone else?
That's awesome! Let us know who you'd like to gift it to when we contact you for fulfillment details (including the email address of the recipient), and we'll take it from there.
When can I expect my products to arrive?
For rewards that include samples, you can expect an estimated shipping time of 1-2 weeks. For rewards that include full-size products, expect a shipping and delivery time of 2-4 weeks.

Are Bailly's perfume oils all-natural?
Our perfume oils are made with 80% natural essential oils and other synthetic aromatics created in a lab. These aromatics are derived from the compounds of its natural source (say pear, for example) and fabricated for use in perfume oils. Synthetic fragrances are heavily regulated by public health bodies.
Do you use parabens?
Never!
Do you test on animals?
No way! All of our products are tested on humans only. Moreover, we love animals and it is very important for us to stay cruelty-free.
Where do you source your materials from?
Currently, all of our ingredients, bottles and packaging are sourced from within the United States.
Are your products gluten-free?
Yes! All of our products are 100% gluten-free and we strongly insist that they do not come into contact with gluten during production.
Are your products vegan?
You bet.
Do your products contain any nut oils?
Our perfume oils contain fractionated coconut oil. Even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes coconut as a tree nut, coconut is not a botanical nut; it is classified as a fruit.
What about allergies?
While allergic reactions to coconut have been documented, coconut oil typically does not irritate people with nut allergies. However, if you do have a nut allergy, we strongly recommend consulting with your physician before using our product.
How do I store perfume oil?
It is best to store your perfume oils in a cool, dark location. The quality and colour of your perfume oil can be altered from prolonged exposure to light but, don't worry, carrying it in your handbag is fine.
What's the shelf life of your perfume oils?
Up to 12 months (if stored properly).
