Meet Sonia Ashford, founder and sole owner of Ashford Education. As an early childhood educator, Sonia spent 31 years teaching, leading, mentoring, and coaching students and colleagues from Kindergarten to Year 4. After observing an increasing number of students with learning difficulties underachieving in the classroom, Sonia stepped away from the school environment and began her own tutoring business, Ashford Education, with the mission of improving the academic performance of students with special needs. Sonia recognised that 21st Century education provided in Australian schools today is not enough to address the differing needs of every child. Ashford Education fills the gaps in a student’s learning and helps them on their way to reaching their learning potential by offering a nurturing environment, individualised instruction, and the positive strategies and skills for learning and thinking.
Project Aims
Opening an independent centre for Ashford Education, with ample space for a range of tutoring services for children with special needs, is the overall AIM of this project. There are two parts to this project.
Why Crowdfunding?
Crowdfunding allows Ashford Education to build a community of followers, engage with future clients, and establish relationships with people who may support us in the future. It is a special opportunity to let the community know Ashford Education exists and inform them of the services we can offer.
All funding will be used in the following ways:
- Leasing a building to house Ashford Education Centre
- Signage for the building
- Marketing and promotion of Ashford Education
- Purchasing furniture such as tables, chairs, shelving, whiteboards, display boards
- Purchasing of technology such as computers and Ipads, headphones
- Purchasing of learning materials such as reading and writing kits, math kits, levelled and interest related reading books, writing materials, visual prompt charts
- Purchasing concrete materials and activities for students such as counters, dice, beads, abacus, number boards, blocks, teaching clocks, games, puzzles
- Other resources linked to students’ literacy and numeracy development

Where will Ashford Education Centre be situated?
I would like a building in the Caroline Springs area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is a central location to the Brimbank and Melton communities, with numerous schools in the area. If a commercial building is financially unviable, I will lease a house with the appropriate space for tutoring.
Don't other tutoring centres tutor children with special needs?
There are many tutoring businesses around, however, Ashford Education is unique because I only tutor primary aged children from Kindergarten to Year 7. Other tutoring places tutor primary and secondary students in a general way. At one tutoring franchise I saw 24 children in a room, each working on a computer, with one tutor and five helpers. Tutoring children with special needs is very much individualised.
Are you a special education teacher?
Yes, I have a Certificate in Special Needs Education, which gives me the knowledge and skills to support students with learning difficulties and disabilities. I believe strongly in collaborative relationships between teacher, student, parents/caregivers and the wider community professionals, to enhance a child's learning and development.
What are the weekend and holiday programs?
Weekend and holiday programs are based on STEM, which is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM education incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics into learning projects. STEM projects develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and the social skills of working with others in a team. STEM is about using the combined efforts and principles of each of its subjects to lead to better learning outcomes. An example of an early childhood STEM project would be a bridge building challenge – Using just some glue, craft sticks, a ruler, and some parchment paper, kids can build a bridge and test just how well it will hold up.
