A Visit to The Bahamas from A to Z

Hello and welcome! 

My name is Veronica. Thank you for visiting my campaign page, A Visit to The Bahamas from A to Z, to be published by Knowledge is Capital. The book is for children aged 5-12.

One aspect of the mission of Knowledge is Capital is to promote cross-cultural understanding by providing children with exposure to different cultures through delightful stories aimed to increase cultural awareness and decrease prejudice.  

I created this story, A Visit to The Bahamas from A to Z, because as a teacher and parent, I noticed that kids did not know the difference between fact and fiction. I also realized that children were not being exposed to other cultures, countries, and languages early enough, which is a missed opportunity to increase their cultural capital. As kids get older, they have fewer opportunities to learn about the beauty of our diverse world. They can become cynical and develop understandings of the world that can have a deleterious impact on their interactions with others.

The primary market for this book, and future products and services by Knowledge is Capital, includes parents, schools, libraries, and the travel and tourism industry which includes the family travel market.

According to the 2017 US Family Travel Survey by the Family Travel Association, 88% of families with children are very likely/likely to travel in the next 12 months. In 2017, the global travel and tourism industry was worth over $5.29 trillion dollars and is expected to continue to grow. A Visit to The Bahamas from A to Z, is a great way to provide pre-departure education about The Bahamas as well as entertain children at any point during their travel experience.

The book can also be used in elementary/primary schools’ social studies curricula as a way to teach cultural awareness, respect for diversity, geography, environmental conservation, STEAM, history, and vocabulary. 

The book encourages curiosity and makes exploration into other countries and cultures fun. Through this travel adventure, I hope to help children realize that we are more alike than different, which can decrease prejudice and increase cross cultural understanding, especially during these challenging times.Your generous support of the campaign will be used for production costs.

Upon my father’s passing, I wanted to find a way to pay tribute to my dad and my mother, who immigrated to the United States from The Bahamas. I wrote the story as a way to keep my dad's memory alive, as well as help my children maintain their connection to family and friends in the country of their grandparents’ birth. This book has been a labor of love. I am excited to share this story which encourages young people to learn about the world around them.

Over the past two years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with RJ Jenkins, a gifted artist who teaches visual arts and coaches three sports at an independent boarding school in Maine. This is RJ's first children's book! Bravo, and thank you RJ for sharing your talents in the production of this book.

Daniel Gibson, founder of The Strategist - Public Relations & Branding firm, is working to help promote the book to audiences in the US and The Bahamas. He is a graduate of Morgan State University where he studied Strategic Communications.
