Reign Free Building a Fair Food System for All

Thank you for your support in Building a Fair Food System for All.  I wanted to update you and give you a small look at the problems and the impact of food insecurity.

Food insecurity is a complex problem and does not exist in isolation for low-income families. Many of the same families also struggle with issues like affordable housing, medical costs, and low wages.

Populations disproportionately affected by food insecurity include:

Racial and ethnic minorities food insecurity:

  • More than two times greater for households whose head was non-Hispanic black or Hispanic compared with households headed by a non-Hispanic white adult.

Women, food insecurity is associated with:

  • Obesity
  • Anxiety and depressive symptoms
  • Risky sexual behavior
  • Negative pregnancy outcomes such as low birth weight and gestational diabetes

Children, food insecurity is associated with:

  • Anemia
  • Asthma
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Cognitive and behavioral problems
  • Higher risk of being hospitalized

Children are particularly susceptible to the negative impacts of food insecurity because their brains and bodies are still developing.
