I am also a recovering do-it-all-by-your-damn-selfer. “I got it,” were three of my favorite words, and I’d rarely ask for or accept support. And it wasn’t until a recent life-changing workshop in 2015 that I realized not only how not asking for support held me back personally and professionally, but also how it limited the ways I could be of service to the world. That mindset shift evolved into me choosing to view support as sexy and empowering, and fueled my desire to share this message with as many women as possible. I created the Support is Sexy podcast to amplify that message to women around the world, and to remind them that having it all doesn't mean doing it all alone!
What is Support is Sexy?
Support is Sexy is a five-day-a-week podcast hosted by a woman entrepreneur for women entrepreneurs, and it features candid interviews with inspiring women entrepreneurs, creatives and leaders, who get real about their entrepreneurial journeys -- where they started, when they struggled and how they STILL made it happen! This isn't just the highlight reel you post on social media. This is a space where women can connect and be honest about the hell-yeah moments and the hard times. We open up about what's really going on and provide our listeners with strategies for success wrapped in powerful storytelling.
Why women entrepreneurs?
Between 2007 and 2016, the number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. increased by 45%, compared to just a 9% increase among all businesses. And for women of color, that number is even higher, with an increase of 126%!
As of 2016, it’s estimated that there are now 11.3 million women-owned businesses in the United States alone, employing nearly 9 million people and generating more than $1.6 trillion in revenue.
Women are creating something sexy in the world, determined to make our own dent in the Universe and taking care of business! But, to do so, we need to remember to take care of ourselves and each other. We are super women; but we do not have to be Superwoman. Support is Sexy podcast supports super women. Launched on July 4th, 2016, the podcast has more than 32,000 downloads, reaches listeners in 73 countries and includes an online community of more than 5000 members. We’ve also received coverage in the Philadelphia Tribune and in Essence magazine. I regularly get notes from women who are inspired by the interviews they've heard on the show -- and who tell me how they're taking action based on the tips, resources and insight shared. Women want this, and I am honored to provide it to them! My mission during the 20 years I've worked in media, and now as a media entrepreneur, has always been to amplify the voices of women, to share their stories and to empower them to be who they are meant to be, not who they are “supposed” to be. But I need your support in continuing this mission!
Why am I raising money, and how will it be used?
I currently produce and fund every single episode of the Support is Sexy podcast from start to finish alone – which includes booking guests, managing schedules, conducting interviews, editing audio, uploading content to multiple platforms, writing all copy for each episode, researching resources, social media marketing and community management. Though I am extremely proud of the first 100+ episodes, the fact that we've hit more than 32,000 downloads and that we reach listeners in 73 countries, this pace for one person for a five-day-a-week podcast is unsustainable and limits our growth and impact.
So I am raising money to support with production and marketing of the Support is Sexy podcast. Your contribution will be used to hire a team of other talented women entrepreneurs who include a talent booker/producer, a podcast production company and a social media strategist, and you will be the reason we can continue to provide value, information, resources and support to women entrepreneurs who are changing the world!
I have worked in media for 20 years as a writer, editor, and producer with companies such as Huffington Post, People, ivillage.com, Essence magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Latina.com and more. I have appeared on Today Show, Nightline, VH1, CNN, BET and XM Radio, and I have spoken about diversity, women’s empowerment, media and entrepreneurship at universities, conferences and institutions around the world, including Columbia University, Spelman College, the Women of Power Summit and the United Nations.
In 2012, I launched my own media company, Chic Rebellion Media, which creates multimedia content to empower multicultural women. My mission has always been to amplify the voices of women, to share their stories and to empower them to control their own narratives.
So, I hope that you will support the Support is Sexy podcast and help us to continue to provide outstanding content and resources to empower women entrepreneurs with powerful stories and inspiration five days a week!
Remember: Support is sexy, and having it all doesn’t mean doing it all alone.
