- What is the mission of your company or project?
- Smart Nutrition, LLC was founded to bring my passion for nutrition education to the public.
- Describe the problem you are solving.
- Nutrition-related illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke kills millions of Americans annually, primarily due to a lack of consumer knowledge about the role of food and nutrition as related to health, wellness, and disease prevention. Hypertension and type 2 diabetes are the leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD). 40% of individuals with type 2 diabetes will develop CKD.
- CKD is a progressive disease, which means that kidney function declines over time. There are generally no symptoms of chronic kidney disease until later stages are reached. Once the kidneys are damaged, they can’t be repaired, so it’s important to keep the disease from progressing and causing further damage. By catching it early, and managing medical conditions, along with nutritional and lifestyle changes, it is possible to slow the progression of CKD.
- What is the market size/opportunity?
- I am licensed to provide nutrition services in the state of Maryland. 15% of US adults or 37 million people, are estimated to have CKD.
- What is your company/product about and how does it solve the problem?
- My company focuses on providing medical nutrition therapy to individuals living with CKD. I also provide services for other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, and hypertension. I believe that knowledge is power. Educating individuals to take better care of themselves is the first step to better health and preventing chronic illness.
- Why are you seeking funding and how will you spend the funding?
- I am seeking funding to move Smart Nutrition, LLC out of my home office and into a public office space where I will be able to provide in-person nutrition services to my clients.
- Who is on your team?
- I am currently the only person on my team, but with physical office space, I could potentially hire additional dietitians to help provide nutrition services.

- Where are you seeking office space?
- I am currently looking for office space in Calvert County, Maryland
- Where are you currently seeing patients?
- Prior to COVID-19 I was co-sharing office space in the evening in Huntingtown, MD. My business was just starting and I had only 2-3 clients a month. During COVID I went 100% virtual and my practice grew and I am currently seeing 10-15 clients per month.
- Why do you need a physical office space?
- Many clients do not have access to a computer or internet. Having a physical office space will allow these clients to come for in-person visits. Also, my home is not appropriate for the services that I offer. I am not ADA compliant at my home and need a space that will allow me to maintain HIPAA compliance. Physical office space will allow me to see virtual and in-person clients and allow me to continue to grow my business.
