Project Description

According to various longitudinal studies, a fulfilling sex life is a key factor contributing to an overall positive quality of life following a spinal cord injury, or SCI (Cencora & Pasiut, 2012). Physical rehabilitation programs have not given the same attention to sexual health as to the gastrointestinal or urological systems, and several authors cite this as an area to improve (Booth, Kendall, Fronek, Miller, & Geraghty, 2003). Sexual health and well-being is an essential part of rehabilitation programs for SCI persons. Because disability often causes negative self-concept and a low self-esteem, Yun and Zubir (2000) reinforce the importance of positive sexual health post injury. SCI affects attitudes towards sexuality and sexual behaviour. Health care professionals tend to neglect these issues. Perhaps it is due to an insensitivity to the sexual needs for the disabled or a lack of understanding and expertise in this area (Yun & Zubir 2000). Therefore, it is essential for couples with SCI to have a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and comforting multidisciplinary network to provide functional solutions to the psychosocial and physical issues they face. The sexABILITIES program strives to break these barriers to healthy sexual lifestyles by addressing communication, assertiveness training, intimacy techniques, adaptive equipment, and pharmacology for people and couples with SCI.

The sexABILITIES program explores barriers to intimate participation that are unique to the individual and or couple. Many issues couples with SCI face are parallel to their able-bodied counterparts, just exacerbated by the stress of SCI. There are about 182 SCI centers across North America who diagnose approximately 12,500 new spinal cord injuries per year. There are few to no existing specialized programs in place to meet the reproductive health needs of these patients. Many leave the hospital not knowing the fate of their intimate life.

This initial round of funding will support the implentation of  the sexABILITIES program at three different SCI centers over the course of twelve months while concurrently conducting the research required to prove the dire need for this specialized programming. This funding will further help support the implementation of the sexABILITIES nationwide to ensure programs such as sexABILITIES become commonplace in the healthcare system and no one leaves the hospital after such a traumatic event confused or questioning the future of the sexual health and wellness.

The Project FAQs

FAQs

Q. How do people in wheelchairs meet other people in wheelchairs to date (once asked by my Grandma who was a bilateral above the knee amputee and wheelchair user)?

A. That's often a misconception of people with disabilities! God rest her soul, but Grandma's question is common among able-bodied people. Most physical disabilities are acquired throughout life and people have to adapt their entire construct of relationships and intimacy to a "new normal." sexABILTIES helps them do just that!

Q. How do people with disabilities have an intimate life?

A. They adapt! Through the use of adaptive equipment and pharmacology. Erotic toys may be useful to overcome physical difficulties, but individuals with SCI may feel embarrassed or have a lack of knowledge on which products would be appropriate for their needs. sexABILTIES introduces these products, tips, and tricks to explore their "new normal" intimate lifestyle.
