Project Description

At subjective skin we want to completely reinvent the way you shop skincare.

The skincare industry has been booming in the past decade as people are embracing a more natural, glowy look over heavy makeup. Of course big companies have caught on and have applied their flashy marketing techniques to just about every skincare brand. Skincare however is different from makeup. It’s a scientifically backed product that can really affect your health if not used correctly.

The global skincare market had total revenues of $130.3 billion in 2019, representing a compound annual growth rate of 4.6% between 2015 and 2019. There are so many brands out there and new ones popping up every year it’s harder than ever to stand out. If you are a skincare company that is doing well however, you will most likely be bought out, and the subject to sales goals and targets.

Skincare is individualized experience and we want to make it that easy. Subjective Skin is a skincare online platform but with several catches:

  1. To enter the store you have to answer our quiz which is matched to an algorithm that individualizes the store. You are only shown products that work scientifically for your skin.
  2. All subjective information is taken away from the shopping experience (hence the name subjective skin). You see the most important information about the products, such as reviews, prices, full ingredient lists, and the outline of the product. We black out all images of products and give them arbitrary names so the ‘aesthetics’ of the brand isn’t the first thing you learn about a product.
  3. The brands on our site have gone through a rigorous selection criteria. My partner and I have tested out all of these products on our skin over several months. These brands are also sustainable, women-led, vegan, and up-and-coming. The trade off to be on our site is for them to compete on how well their product is performing without the brand recognition.

We are seeking funding to improve our website functionality and hire more marketing/dev team members. At the end of the day our product is a tech product and we do not have the current funds to produce the best version of our product just yet.

The team is made of two women, Astha and Lydia, who work as Co-Founders and currently cover every operational/marketing aspect of the business. We outsourced the web development.

We really want to see this saturated industry change and create a supportive, non-toxic environment for new skincare brands. We want to be a Public Benefit corporation and support these brands as much as we can while also getting everyone to the best skin of their lives!

The Campaign FAQs

Why are you unbranded?

A: We keep it unbranded, not because we do not want you to know the name of the company. Actually, we have listed out all brands on our About Page. We want to stay unbranded so that your ‘first impression’ of the brand is not based on marketing but based on value added facts. Facts such as brand philosophy, their impact and ingredients they use, facts that will help your skin. Think of us as a first point of sale for these small brands that are trying to create change.

Do products arrive unbranded?

A: No, we keep it unbranded only so that your ‘first impression’ of the product is not based on marketing but based on facts. But don’t worry, the product you will receive will be fully branded.

How do I know the products are good?

A: We have worked very hard to select specific brands that suit our criteria of using active ingredients, fair pricing and ones that focus on an impact and value-driven approach. Brands that want to help your skin not just entice you with marketing and branding. We have tested these products out ourselves and have seen them work very well. These are also brands with products that have good reviews.

Please do keep in mind that even if we try to provide products specific to your skin concern, it’s always good to consult your dermatologist before using any of the ingredients listed on the products you have purchased.

Where do you operate?

A: We make this a localized business, meaning you can only purchase brands in the region you are shopping from to minimize our carbon footprint and support local economies. The three regions we operate out of are the European Union, United States, and Canada.

How do I receive a package from different brands?

A: At this point in time you will be receiving packaging from each brand. Eventually we want to have our own fulfillment centre to minimize packaging.

How do I enter the store?

A: You have to be logged in or, if you are a new member, you have to do a skin quiz. Note that you don't have to sign up to use our site but you will miss out on the Personal Account features if you don't sign in. Once you have answered the quiz you will be shown products that work for your skin type and skin concerns!
