From Bloom To Rebirth 

Co-founders Blaire Bradford and Umarah Mughnee turned their passion into purpose with Open Tabs Studio. Open Tabs is a Black and woman-owned floral studio specializing in rebranding spaces through design and strategy. 

We provide offerings for both brands and consumers. Operating since 2019, we’ve already inspired company rebrands that acquired new customer bases and increased revenue. We’ve also successfully launched a revenue stream that includes custom offerings, both perishable and nonperishable, upon customer request.

Based in Washington, D.C., we’ve been operating with the help of our tribe, family, friends, and supporters alike around the country.  

Moving In Our Purpose

Our roots are what drives our purpose in floral design. Co-founders Blaire and Umarah both come from families that used flowers as a resource. Blaire’s flower-based narrative began with her late grandfather, seeped through generations, and is relevant now, more than ever. Umarah’s story comes full circle as her great grandmother, grandmother and mother used gardening to raise their families and communities. It’s in our family history to work with flowers. Now, it’s our turn to live out this purpose with Open Tabs.

Inspired by our stories, Open Tabs’ mission is to inspire creation by indulging the unconventional world around us. Our offerings allow our tribe to find joy in the process and dare to envelop the power of being with and of yourself. 

We understand that flowers provide space to be and become. Open Tabs curates to experience divinity in the details; from blooming to rebirth. 

The Opportunity

An important market trend: “Google searches for “flower delivery” doubled from March 2019 to March 2020, and Pinterest found searches for "flower boxes'' were up 408 percent year over year.” 

This trend along with the fact that flowers are scientifically proven to boost moods, especially during times of pandemic, provides an opportunity for Open Tabs to take advantage of. Providing offerings to both businesses and consumers, floral design is a solution to taking care of the mental wellbeing of people everywhere, which is so adamantly craved. 

Our Approach

Things we hate the most: stereotypes and being stereotyped. More often than we like to admit, the world moves too fast and people and brands fall into these boxes [stereotypes]. To solve this problem, Open Tabs offers strategy with our designs, centering our approach around hand-picked, locally-sourced flowers, vintage materials, and color therapy. We focus on the floral decoration and design for small boutique interiors and intimate occasions, personalizing our offerings and, definitely, not putting them in a box.

We encourage collaboration with creative, minority-owned, and small lifestyle brands.  

Where Your Support Will Go

Your support will go into helping us pay it forward into our community by hiring and educating on floral design and strategy. It will also go towards us moving into a permanent studio space and expanding our business into a full-time operation. We are committed to being students of the craft, aiming to inspire safe spaces with our work, empowering the creative community around us.
