NAL Media was started after recognizing the disparities for underrepresented artists in the media industry. What LinkedIn describes as the ‘networking gap’ has stifled the realm of opportunity for marginalized identities. As a result, NAL media was established to create an online networking platform for underrepresented artists to connect and gain access to mentorship. To date, our community has grown to over 2,000 members. This growth has resulted in mentorship from people like Amanda Seales, DEETRANADA, Maura Chanz, and Kennedi Carter. 

This growth has also led to opportunities to tour with choreographer Anthony Burrell, work for the Latin Grammy’s, and become a spotlight in Youtube’s ‘Black Renaissance’ special with Barack and Michelle Obama. In six months, NAL has continued to disrupt the media industry. As we look towards the next six months, we would like to expand our mentorship program, continue to consult with companies to hire diverse artists, and finally, continue to disrupt the system of gatekeeping in media.

NAL is working to disturb the white male-dominated scene that exists in media. To do so, we are on a mission to raise $30K. Any amount is greatly appreciated. We have launched our campaign through ifundwomen, an online crowdfunding company that has provided a safe space for women of color. $30K will help us do the following: 

  • Provide regular technology updates 
  • Hire an additional team member
  • Expand our mentorship campaign
  • Help with additional marketing
  • Provide an emergency fund 
  • If 1,000 people donate $30 each, we will be able to accomplish our goal. We thank those who donate in advance and look forward to the journey ahead of NAL Media.

What is your website?

How did you all start?

NAL media was started in July 2019, after the founder, Naomi Lilly, spent the duration of her junior year doing study abroad programs through her academic institution, Duke University. Lilly would do a total of four internships in entertainment: Live Nation Entertainment, Horizon Media, iOne Digital, and BET. Between her time in New York and Los Angeles, Lilly met creatives looking for communities and opportunities and executives looking to source diverse talent. As a result, NAL was birthed.

Who is on the team?

NAL has been led by a team of three women of color for the past year. Each with experience in non-profit work, media, fashion, beauty, and filmography/photography. As young professionals, the team recognized a need for mentorship and an online networking platform for industries that fall within the media realm. 

What are the objectives of NAL?

NAL has 3 meaningful objectives: to create a pipeline between marginalized communities and professional opportunities in the media industry;  to foster community for underrepresented creatives, and to impact future generations of creatives through mentorship initiatives and partnerships across the country.

Why didn’t we merge with an existing platform?

While there are other efficient professional platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed, NAL is the only platform that focuses on providing mentors to our community.  We are aware that there is a space and need for mentorship in a realm that is often based on "who you know".  As a result, we set ourselves apart from other platforms. 

Why is NAL unique?

NAL is the only platform within the entertainment industry that solely focuses on building bridges between marginalized creators and opportunities in the media industry.  Now more than ever we recognize a need for intentional representation across all industries in media.
