Project Description
*OUR MISSION*
Mixed Mag intends to create an online platform for
creatives of color and celebrating
Multiethnic/Multicultural voices.
As BIPOC/Black biracial women, we recognize that there is a lack of representation in mainstream media/news for those that identify as BIPOC/Multiethnic/Multicultural. We, along with many other BIPOC and multiracial persons, often find that there is not a space for us started by those who come from our community to talk about our experiences and the challenges we face in every day, as well as find a platform that will promote our work/art.
According to the 2019 US Census, there are approximately 77.7 million people who identify as POC. Out of that number, approximately 9 million US citizens identify as biracial/multiracial. Also, according to the Pew Research Center, in a study done in 2015, the population of people who identify as biracial/multiracial is growing at a rate that is three times as fast as the US population as a whole. They also hypothesize that the population of mixed-race persons will triple by the year 2060.
Our online magazine includes a range of sections from Politics to Art & Fashion to Creative Non-Fiction to Music to Theater, Film & TV and more! Because we are a multimedia magazine, we are also working with interested monthly contributors to bring podcasts and video projects via Soundcloud and Youtube to our monthly issues!
SO WHY CROWDFUNDING?
In the few months since we've started our platform, one thing has been very clear:
We are essential.
As our audience slowly grows, we've received more submissions, more contributor pitches, more messages from viewers and readers thanking us for creating this platform. Joana, Carolina and myself have been putting in the time and resources, and the work is already beginning to pay itself off. We want to begin to find the resources available to raise capital so we can continue ensuring an online mainstream space for creatives of color.
The funding from this campaign will be invested in the following:
1. Operational overhead, which will support the continuation of content creation/publication.
2. Branded Merchandise
3. Resources for our Youtube & podcast series, including a monthly freelance video and sound editor.
4. An on-staff graphic designer that will create advertisements for our upcoming issues as well as promotional material for submissions and more!
5. An on-site web developer.
6. Compensation for team members for editorial work on a freelance basis.
