mAInd - Mental Health Diagnosis through AI
Improving mental health diagnosis through Artificial Intelligence
Project Description
What is mAInd?
mAInd is a software that will use Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technology in addition to psychology, psychiatry, and cognitive science to improve diagnosis in mental health. This will provide efficiency and time-saving in diagnostic sessions, decrease hospitalizations and decrease the time invested in treatment trial-and-error. By improving diagnosis times, we can cut down on in-patient requirements and thus decrease the investment in cases that are not critical.
The Problem
The issue of misdiagnosis in mental health is a troubling one. A study conducted in 7 primary care clinics in 3 Canadian provinces during 2005 - 2006 resulted in the alarming rates of 65.9% misdiagnose for major depressive disorder, 92.7% for bipolar disorder, 85.8% for panic disorder, 71.0% for generalized anxiety disorder, and 97.8% for social anxiety disorder.
Now more than ever the world is being impacted by mental health-related issues. The percentages of misdiagnosis are alarming and lead to self-medication, substance abuse, and an overall cost of over $2.5 trillion per year (2010). This cost includes health care costs, lost productivity, cost of physician visits, hospitalizations, morbidity and mortality, and other related costs such as social welfare administration and reductions in health-related quality of life.
The Solution
mAInd proposes an innovative solution that uses AI/ML technology to improve diagnostics in mental health. This would serve as a complement to psychiatrists and psychiatric clinics around the world by giving accurate input on the probable diagnosis. This diagnosis would be achieved through pattern recognition of environmental, biological, emotional, and genetic information. This information would be collected by our team of psychologists, psychiatrists, cognitive science professionals, and with the results of focus control groups and data from the DSM-V (Diagnostics and Statistics Manual).
