Project Description

Kenetic Athletics' mission is to make competitive and recreational gymnastics more accessible to boys and girls of color. Since the beginning of time, this sport has lacked equal representation due to: the lack of exposure in black communities; lack of resources in black school systems & community centers; and high costs and suburban locations of competitive facilities nationwide.

Baby & Me Private Lessons
Baby & Me Private Outdoor Lessons while closed due to COVID-19!

In 2012 and 2016, we saw two black gymnasts, Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles, take the Olympic all-around title effortlessly. We had not seen a black Olympic champion since 1996, when Dominque Dawes was apart of the Magnificent 7. These two gymnasts have brought modern awareness to this sport and now...more young black girls and boys want to be gymnasts than ever before!!

I am providing an accessible, affordable and comfortable environment for them to begin their gymnastics careers. Where they will not be the "only one in the room". Where they will have coaches and staff that understand them and can relate to their everyday lives. Where they will be free of racial bias, prejudice or judgement. Where they can take a break from reality and just be kids.

As a Junior Olympic National Champion myself, I am well equipped to provide this space and produce successful athletes. Our market is girls and boys ages 18 months to 18 years in the Metro Detroit area. The facility we have in Redford Charter Township, MI has no local competitors. The nearest competitive centers to us are each more than 25-30 minutes. Our current athletes are located in: Southfield, Huntington Woods, Birmingham, Detroit, Redford, Pontiac, Grosse Pointe, Troy and Oak Park. We strive to additionally be accessible to the cities of: Royal Oak, Inkster, Farmington and Livonia.

Our gymnastics classes are not simply to play extracurricular sports, but to aid our athletes in personal and professional development. Gymnastics teaches: discipline, confidence, perseverance, focus, overcoming fears, public presentation, body positivity and awareness, healthy eating habits/exercise, and many more. We are providing a safe space for our youth to spend their time wisely and stay out of trouble's way. Regularly participating in sports helps to fight against the "school-to-prison" pipeline  that hinders black and brown communities.

Kenetic Athletics partnered with Stevenson Elementary
Kenetic Athletics partnered with Stevenson Elementary to provide tumbling lessons onsite after-school

This is our very first official location and it has been highly anticipated by our athletes, parents and supporters. We are seeking funding to purchase additional competitive equipment, aid in start-up fees (insurance policy, renter's insurance, lease payments/utilities, etc.), purchase PPE for our coaches to give at no cost, competition fees/apparel, and fund our low-income students that are able to take classes at a reduced cost.

My name is Kendyl V. Stewart and I am the owner of this organization. I fell in love with this sport at 5 years old and after a decorated 13-year competitive career, I fell in deeper love with coaching young people to be even better than me. After a decade of coaching, I have finally been able to provide the space that I wish I could've competed for. Thank you in advance for supporting my facility, my athletes and my business. Stay updated with us on social media (IG: @keneticathletics) for our grand opening on October 3, 2020! Remember, you could be funding the gymnastics center of the next black Olympic gold medalist!

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How will you be using your funds? All funds will be used to purchase equipment, aid in start-up fees and monthly expenses, purchase PPE for our employees, fund our tuition assistance program, and purchase competitive apparel for our athletes at no cost to them.
  • What have you been doing prior to this facility? Kenetic Athletics has been partnering with local schools, recreation centers and sports teams to provide on-site tumbling classes and camps. In June 2020, we began providing outdoor private home lessons due to COVID-19 shutdowns. All of this has given us the capital and clientele to get our own space to begin practicing all 4 gymnastics events!
  • How can we sign up for classes or stay in contact with you? Please like us on Facebook at "Kenetic Athletics" and follow us on instagram at @keneticathletics. Also visit our website www.keneticathletics.com to join our mailing list and register!
