WHY IS TOOKTAKE DOING A FUNDRAISER?
While tooktake is priced affordably at $4.99 for a package of 4 labels, we do realize that there are many people who can barely cover the copay for their prescriptions, so they may not be able to afford tooktake but can still benefit from it. That’s why we are using this fundraiser to not only help tooktake, but to help the nonprofit pharmacies that have reached out to us that are in communities that serve this population. The simple addition of a tooktake label to a prescription to help ensure that it is used as directed. This can help keep people out of the hospitals and emergency rooms, which is more important now than ever before. (see FAQ for more on pharmacy) We would love to be able to help as many of them as we can provide this resource to their customers free of charge. Your support here will allow us to do that.
Right now, tooktake is just me, and that’s been working well. I do have family and friends who jump in and help when I need it. But right now it’s been a bit tough financially. Right before this outbreak I was just starting to get into pharmacies and was getting ready to do testing with a big company. But, that’s all on hold right now. But I did stock up A LOT for that test and I need to pay my vendors. I know that I can ask them for an extension and they would probably do it or would have to while I try to find the funds. But since I work with other small businesses as my vendors I know that they are counting on these invoices being paid so that they can take care of their families and keep their businesses going as well. The funds that are received for the purchase of the tooktake labels that go to the nonprofit pharmacies and low-income pharmacies will be used to help pay the vendors that I currently owe money.
WHAT IS TOOKTAKE?
Tooktake is a simple dosage reminder system that lets you know if you took, or still need to take your prescription and over-the-counter medication and supplements. Unlike conventional pillboxes or complicated “smart” solutions, tooktake works for tablets, capsules, liquids, creams, ointments, drops and most other types of packaging, and are available in three formats to cover most dosage requirements.
The actual tooktake product consists of three variations of a patent-pending sticker design that you can adhere to any sort of medication/supplement packaging, or anything that you need to use or take on a regular basis. Eye drops, allergy meds, pain medication, your kids’ vitamins, your cat’s medication, your dog’s ear drops, your teen’s acne face wash — no matter what form it’s in you can stick a tooktake label on it!
For a long time, I had used a kind of homemade system to remind me to take medication when I really needed to, because I was REALLY bad at remembering it.
But it wasn’t until I was in treatment for breast cancer in 2018 that I really refined the system and came to rely on it to manage all my medications.
Since we are designers by profession, my husband and I further developed the product while I was in treatment and by the time I finished treatment on Dec 26th, 2018 I was ready to start working full time on making tooktake viable business.
HOW DOES TOOKTAKE WORK?
Once you have placed the tooktake label on the container you simply remove the little tab that corresponds to the dose you’re taking. For example, if I need to take a medication twice a day for an extended period of time, I would use a Daily label. On Monday morning I would remove the tab with the “M” on it from the lighter (AM) side of the label and in the evening I would remove the “M" from the darker (PM) side. Once you have finished removing all the tabs on the label you easily peel off the centerpiece and replace it with a new tooktake label.
Right now the three designs help you adhere to daily, up to 10 day or hourly dosing schedules.
WHY DO I NEED TOOKTAKE?
Nearly ⅔ of Americans take a prescription medication and of those about 50% of them do not take them as directed. This is called “medication non-adherence”. Non-adherence is the cause of a huge amount of unnecessary physical and emotional suffering, financial loss, and premature deaths that cost too many people precious time that they could have with their loved ones. One example can be found with heart medication. Better adherence to antihypertensive treatments could prevent 89,000 deaths each year and save $106 billion dollars in healthcare costs.
That being said, the market for tooktake is really anyone who needs to take or use anything on a regular basis and has trouble remembering. The early adopters of tooktake seem to be women 20-60 who buy them for themselves and family members. There is a HUGE market for people who are currently being ignored with regard to medication adherence. The focus is currently on people who are elderly or very ill. But this doesn’t include all the people who want to get well or stay well, aren’t used to taking medication, and easily forget. Products in this category include antibiotics, cholesterol medication, allergy medication, eczema lotions, ADHD meds for kids and teens, not to mention the mental health care space! The list goes on and on!
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about tooktake and help us stay around so that we can continue to help people get well and stay well one dose at a time.
