The Big Stone Gap General Store & Cafe will join together people from near and far to create community through food, drink, music, arts, crafts, and all things Big Stone Gap. The town was once a booming coal town that helped to build the United States. When the industry left the town, it experienced an enormous decrease in its economy as well as challenges retaining their talented youth to stay and create businesses.
With the quintessential natural beauty of the Appalachian mountains, Big Stone Gap has an immense story to share. Big Stone Gap has historical museums and the longest continually running outdoor drama in Virginia, Trail of the Lonesome Pine. With a population of 5400 people, the general store & cafe will serve the community by showcasing its history and talent within a revitalized downtown historic building that once housed the oldest business and only newspaper of the town, The Post.
We are raising funds to revitalize this 5,000 sq ft building in downtown Big Stone Gap. The building has mid-19th century tin ceilings and wood floors. Underneath its plaster walls, are blocks stamped with by the block maker. Unfortunately, this building needs help to make the space usable for the artists, musicians, and restaurant. We will use the money to create a new face for the building and the musician's stage.
Our initial pre-opening team consists of our family (Brian, Olive, and Penny) as well as the building contractor and the community. Once the business is open, we will hire local people as employees.
Any amount of support you can offer is crucial to the success of this project and we give many thanks for helping this vision come to fruition!
