Project Description

Much too often did I hear my female students say, “I am bad in math, because I am a girl.” I started KnowledgeQuest Learning Center in 1995 out of determination to help my students –mostly girls– by taking abstract math out of the classroom and teach it by illustrating its real world applications. Our enrichment classes improved the students' grades in STEM fields as well as their self-confidence.

Over time, KnowledgeQuest expanded to also provide remediation classes in reading, writing, and homework help for children with learning disabilities and educational support for students from under-represented minorities and low-income families. For the success of our innovative hands-on pedagogy, we received the "Best Tutoring Center in San José" award for the past nine years in a row.

The pandemic has forced schools to instruct online.  Yet, many students cannot easily adopt to the virtual teaching modality.  The learning loss is immense and more than ever, students need educational help in addition to their school work.

Usually, our students have nobody in their household, who can assist them with homework and their learning challenges.  It is often exactly those families, who can least afford after-school tutoring sessions. Your donation would assist us in hiring additional teachers and providing scholarships to support our current and new struggling students.

Furthermore, our holistic approach not only teaches knowledge, but also provides the students with emotional support, imparts social skills, and aims to develop their personality overall.

While we would like to expand our services to offer help for an increasing number of students, the cost of providing after-school instruction has risen disproportionally. Due to health requirements, our in-person teaching has become more restricted and expensive.  We need additional room to appropriately space students, and we need more teachers, because the teacher-to-student ration must be much smaller for the time being.

So much need!  So much work!  Yet, resources are woefully scarce.  With your generous donation, we could do much more to help students in need – so much more than we are currently able to do.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What do you love most about your job?

I love working with kids. On their good days as well as on their bad ones, they are always the most rewarding part of my job. Many of our students are struggling with learning in some way, and to see them overcoming these challenges is incredible. Some are very discouraged, and they think of themselves as being “stupid” (in their words). Additionally, many have low self-esteem due to their poor academic performance. My primary goal is to change their minds about themselves. Doing hard work, seeing results, and experiencing success will help children realize that they are in fact quite smart. They just did not yet develop the necessary skills or they missed something along the way. They are like little birds who take off, and it is a great joy to see them fly high. Moreover, our company is like a family. We all get to know each other. Many students come back to say “hello” to us long after they have completed their tutoring.
