Project Description

I am Kayisha Thompson from Brooklyn, NY Cake Executive Officer of De L’or Cakery.   My clients include Neiman Marcus, the CEO of Cocoa Grinder, and Curvycon. My award winning products range from gourmet liquor infused custom cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, and cakes with premium ingredients. Our best-selling flavors are wicked dark chocolate and bourbon caramel.  De L’or Cakery is your premier cake caterer offering the crème de la crème of gourmet cakes.

In 2013 my past employer wrongfully terminated me as their business wasn’t working out and mine was. One week after my termination I won a $5,000.00 scholarship competing in the Count Me In Urban Rebound Program. This is the birth of my dream a fellowship sponsored by De L’or Cakery.

In New York City, there are over 25, 000 youth currently in the foster care system. Of that number only 6% earn a 2 or 4 year degree by the age of 24. Our fellowship program would offer scholarships to those teens with a strong desire to advance their skillset in the area of Sugar Artistry. Scholarship recipients would learn basic and advanced cake designing techniques. De l’or Cakery has a social commitment to youth in the foster care system. The goal of the program is to improve the rate of entry of success for foster youth entering into post-secondary education.

With your support, we will launch our program in a studio in New York City. Funding will support our youth with coursework materials, supplies, uniforms, transportation fees, meals, and their own cake decorating tool set. You can change the life of a youth in the foster care system what’s stopping you?

The Campaign FAQs

The potential risk would be consistency as some of the biological parents of youth in foster care due to their own lagging skills and inexperience may not allow their teenager to engage in such a program. Some families struggle when they learn that a program as such is linked through Social Services. To combat this challenge, our referral process will include the Social Worker, School Guidance Counselor, Foster Parent, biological parent, and our prospective student. It takes a village to raise a child and all hands must be on deck.

After completing this fellowship program a youth may come to the decision that Sugar Artistry & Cake Decorating is not the route that they want to venture down. In retrospect, this is not a risk it’s a stretch however this youth has a set of skills that they will not forget and it would still make him or her employable until they realize what alternative career path they want to explore.

Compliance. As a Socio-therapist Supervisor and former Mental Health Clinician compliance with services can be a challenge. Some at risk youth do not attend school for various reasons including transportation issues, lack of motivation, an unbalance home life, and poor adjustment to the foster homes. In New York State the legal age to drop out of high school is 17 years old. However when an individual is engaging in a program that they are interested in with someone that has experience working with at risk youth compliance may not be a challenge. I have 15 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and at risk teenagers and as long as you are genuine you can engage them. I am interested in working with at risk youth ages 15 and older as this is the marker where some youth in care may start losing interest in their academics. This program needs the connection with the school counselors and social workers. I would take the lead in introducing my learners to educational institutions that lead to a 2 and 4 year degree in the pastry arts.

Most importantly some at risk youth traumatic history may hinder their ability to function in an educational setting. Some of the youth in foster care may have been exposed negatively to an eye for an eye mindset. To be clear, if someone is helping me then they (adult) must want something in return from me (youth). I am openly referring to the #metoo movement. Once again, this is where the referral source (Social Workers/School Counselors) input is vital as those youth may need additional forms of support throughout the fellowship process.
