Project Description

The Mission of Maika’i Health is, "To be the patient-centered healthcare home that is accessible for all and be the center for healthcare learning excellence in East Hawai'i."  Maika’i Health is a non-profit community health center and our aim is to help reduce the health disparities and inequities present in our rural East Hawai'i Island community.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, 38% (39,819) of our target population did not have a designated primary care provider (PCP).  Since January 2020 when the pandemic hit, eleven clinics in our market have closed because the provider opted to retire or move back to the mainland U.S.  Access to health services for the most at-risk populations is even more critical.  Now, our market are the 39,819 residents without a PCP and those who are now at-risk due to their PCP closing their clinics.

Our community health clinic offers primary medical, dental, and behavioral health care for all, including people and families who are Medicaid/Medicare insured.  We will expand access to healthcare services in our market, which has become especially critical now with the COVID-19 outbreak.

We are seeking funding to ensure our clinic is compliant with the CDC COVID-19 recommended safety guidelines for healthcare professionals.  The funds will be used to purchase a three-month supply of PPEs, such as masks, gloves for our clinical staff, cleaning supplies, wipes, as well as purchase clear panel dividers for our wait room and work spaces.

Our team of twelve healthcare professionals and support people are dedicated to helping to address the social determinants of health and socioeconomic disparities present in our rural community.  Although the outbreak of COVID-19 has created uncertainty and stress, we all remain even more committed to making our mission a reality.

The entire island is a federally designated medically underserved area, so your support will have a profound impact on ensuring affordable medical services for all in East Hawaii, particularly for those most at-risk.  To our supporters, mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) from our entire staff, patients, and future patients.  Without your support, we will not be able to help our community recover from this pandemic.
