A few years ago, I began to teach myself beadweaving and decided to share my creations with women. The initial goal was to practice metalwork, but that didn't work in my favor. Instead, I went to the library and began studying the various beadworking methods, began buying and reading books by the boatloads, watching videos online, just do anything I could to acquire the skills needed to create what I envisioned. Seeing the first few diagrams of the various stitches — peyote, ring angle, herringbone, etc — was very much like learning a new language, but I stuck with it and created my first pieces. The one that comes to mind was a yellow floral ring made using approximately 26 gauge wires. Due to the wire's ability to hold the position that it's placed it, you could shape and mold the petals as you chose to. I'm not sure what my initial goal was for beYOUteous, but it wasn't to build a business. Fast forward to today, and it remains that "what if..." in the back of my mind. What if I dared to believe in myself more?
Growing up in Haiti, I remember the house being filled with the smell of roasted flour, the beginnings of glue that my sister, brother and I would use to put together kites. I remember making and racing colorful tins cars with my dad, carving a piece of wood into a slingshot with my brother, creating makeshift water fountains with my sister to bathe our dolls. As a result, to this day I feel that love and care is shown more by these things... and have since always had the fondness for things handmade.
What's on the Horizon
I'd love for beYOUteous to be a tongue-in-cheek brand that promotes self-acceptance while sharing unique pieces of jewelry created at various points in life. So what you walked out the door with your legs only partially shaven? That new ring you picked up? Yes, strut your stuff as you're wearing it. YOU own this! And yet the times when you feel that you're at your ugliest, beauty still shines within you... never forget that.
Long term, I'd like to introduce new mediums as well as incorporate my photography into the jewelry making process. Some of the work that inspires me can be found here. So, a portion of the funds will go towards formal training. I've been photographing, copywriting, marketing, creating, etc to get the puppies out there. It'll be nice to hire help and focus on the creation aspect more.
Future goals also include motivational eNewsletter, possible book (inspiration, cocktails, tongue-in-cheek philosophy, humor).
The funds raised will be used for the following:
- Education: coursework in metalworking, glassblowing, and ceramics
- Technology: new laptop with Adobe Creative Suite, lightbox for ongoing product photography
- Branding & Marketing: Getting the word out! The overall feel should be "From [me]. To [you]."
- Photography: Professional photos for the website with individuals wearing the pieces to scale.

Why You Should Care
Though it doesn't always happen, everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their love and grow in the direction that most suits their skills. Creatives, many times, end up settling in a different field as pursuing their craft doesn't afford them the opportunity for a sustainable life. That said, thank you in advance for taking the time to read this, and any contribution towards making this goal come to fruition! Please support and share.
