Project Description

My name is Victoria Beaty, and I am the founder of Be Well Indy, an urban farmer, and communications professional. Be Well Indy is a hyper-local media company that focuses on highlight the people and places impacting the wellness scene in Indianapolis, IN. Additionally, we create events to inspire people to start their own wellness journey.

Our mission is to make wellness accessible to all community members by highlighting the people and places that define and shape the local wellness scene on a single platform.

Be Well Indy, is based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Indiana's obesity rate ranks 12th in the United States, according to a recent report by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation. The report said an alarming 69 percent of people in Indianapolis (Marion County) are overweight or obese, and we looked into the contributing factors.

Health disparities among Black people are well documented. Black people are more likely than white people to die from cancer. They are more likely to suffer from chronic pain, diabetes, and depression. Black children report higher levels of stress. Black mothers are more likely to die in childbirth.  Recent data from APM Research Labs, shows Black people are dying from COVID-19 at 2.4 times higher rate than white people and 2.2 times the death rate of Asians and Latinxs. This is due to systemic racism, including where we live and work, and the lack of access to quality of health care.

When you think of wellness, Black people are not often recognized in the space. The Global Wellness Industry is said to be worth $4.5 trillion in 2018 and shows no signs of slowing down. When it comes to health and wellness, the need for Black to be apart of that conversation is more critical than ever.

Our goal is to create free monthly wellness and fitness events and resources for those in underserved areas to remove any barriers to inspire people to Live Well, Eat Well and Be Well.

We believe WELLNESS should be for ALL! Your support will help us build healthier communities, one neighborhood at a time.

Thank you in advance for your support.
