Ambitious Women of Color Association
AWOCA is THE business and professional networking community exclusively for Womxn of Color.
Project Description
OUR MISSION
The Ambitious Women of Color Association (AWOCA) is a business and networking community specifically for Women of Color (WOC). Our community is similar than that of a Chamber of Commerce, except this is a for-profit business model, since we want to lead the way in showing our members that building wealth is something to strive for. Wealth is power and influence, and we aim to have more Women of Color in positions of power and influence in businesses, corporate leadership, and our government. We believe that Women of Color will change the world for the better in ways history hasn’t really allowed up to this point.
There's power in numbers, and if all Women of Color unite we make up about 20% of the US population. Unfortunately we we only hold about 11% of management positions and 12% of the seats in the House of Representatives. And, of course, there is the wage gap. Asian Women make 90 cents to the dollar of their White male counterparts, Black Women 63 cents to the dollar, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander make 63 cents to the dollar, and Latinx women only make 55 cents to the dollar of their White male counterparts.
As one of our members so eloquently put it, as Women of Color we need to stop trying to get a seat at the table and build our own damn table! We can't wait around for policy to magically change on it's own. We have to take matters into our own hands to eradicate systemic oppression and create the type of equality we want to see in the world. The Ambitious Women of Color Association aims to create a type of economic and political influence that this country desperately needs.
THE VISION
The big-picture goal is for this organization to expand to 10,000 members nationwide with chapters in every major city. That way any Womxn of Color who is visiting or moving to a new city has a built in community of support that want's to see her win!
WHAT WE'LL BE DOING WITH YOUR GENEROUS DONATION
This crowdfunding will help expedite the nationwide expansion of the Association. The business plan is in place, but the process requires administrative time, social media and CRM management, and an updated website with new photographs and videos. We will also be investing in the necessary legal paperwork and filings to make expansion happen.
The founder is currently a one woman operation. Reaching this crowdfunding goal will also allow her to bring on a much needed part-time administrative assistant.
THANK YOU FROM AWOCA FOUNDER
Three and a half years ago, after being burned out by my experience with a local Chamber of Commerce, I decided to be the change I wanted to see and started a Meetup group for Women of Color. I am consistently blown away by the caliber of women I meet, and it has become my life's work to provide more visibility and opportunity to these women through the power of community. In making your contribution you are helping to make that dream a reality and I can't thank you enough.
