What is Abastitch?
Abastitch is Fitbit-like technology for your knitting or crochet projects that counts your stitches so you don't lose your place.
Why do I need Abastitch?
Everyday life is full of distractions. Kids, pets, email, texts, social media, tv, phone calls…all can easily pull your attention away from your project causing you to lose count or make a mistake. Even keeping track of your stitches in the traditional ways can sway your focus. Stopping to click a counter, clip in a marker, or track with pencil and paper takes your eyes off what you are doing. Abastitch solves this problem by counting your stitches so you can be confident you are right on track.
How did Abastitch start?
I was beginning to crochet a scarf a year ago while on a road trip with my family. I had to do a chain of 500 stitches and between singing to the radio, talking to my kids, and checking the GPS, I kept losing count. I had to go back and re-count multiple times. It got very frustrating so I put it down and started doing some research on ways to keep track of my stitches more easily. (Surely something exists, right?) Many miles and google searches later, everything I found in the current market was manual. Either I tap the screen on an app to advance the stitch count, clip in a marker after completing a certain number of stitches, click a counter or literally write it down with pencil and paper. That’s just one more thing to keep up with amongst all the other distractions (and one more thing to fall between the car seats). A smart counter does not yet exist so I started brainstorming Abastitch for selfish reasons...I want to use it!
I began talking to crocheters and knitters and found that this is a common problem. I knew I wasn't the only one! You get distracted and lose your count and you get frustrated. Many people said they have even abandoned projects because of too many mistakes so they were super excited to hear about a new (much easier) way to keep up with stitches. The response has been overwhelming!
I began thinking of Abastitch like a Fitbit for your crochet project so I started playing with simple prototype ideas. (I literally taped a Fitbit to my crochet hook.)
It didn’t work.
To take it beyond what I could do, I found some massively talented people and we’ve been hard at work.
The first time I saw the tracking data map out it truly felt like seeing the heartbeat of Abastitch.
How big is the crochet & knitting market?
There are a lot of us.
There are 53 MILLION PEOPLE who knit or crochet in the United States alone.
In the past 20 years there has been a 400% increase in the number of people who knit or crochet in the US and in 2017, craft supply retailer net sales were $44 billion. So, yeah. The market for Abastitch is huge!
Where are we with Abastitch?
We've been hard at work developing a prototype. We've gotten partially there on our own. Our initial device is able to recognize and count individual stitches but it needs a lot of refinement. And this is where you come in! The money we are raising on iFundWomen is to further refine and perfect the prototype and we need your help to get us over the finish line.
I am so excited to have you and iFundWomen on this journey with me. Abastitch is a brand new, innovative idea and if there’s anything we’ve learned from the iFundWomen community it’s that you support new ideas. We’ve put all our expertise and passion into Abastitch and we’re so excited to share our vision with you. It’s because of you that we are able to take these next steps in bringing Abastitch to the crafting world. We know you won’t be disappointed!
Thank you so much and happy stitching!
