Our mission at Melanin Cafe is to serve our customers high quality coffee and educate them on black history and black culture. The coffee industry is a billion dollar industry that is loved by many, but not many black faces are seen running this industry. We want to mix our love for coffee with the history and culture of our people. Education in schools on black people, history, and culture has been limited to a few people, a couple of events, and a small number of accomplishments. The problem with this is that there are so many black people that have accomplished and done so much for this country, but we don't know much about them. We get about 3 pages in a history book and a black history month that usually only mentions a handful of people. I remember sitting in my 11th grade history class and the section of civil rights came up. My white male teacher didn't spend that time to tell us about the movement, the many people who were involved in it, or the lives lost to the racism and bigotry, but he spent the entire 2 day section talking about how bad of a person Martin Luther King Jr. was and how his personal life took away his martyr title. That alone wanted me to learn more about my people and how we have contributed to the progression of this country and spread that education to others. So why not serve one of the most loved beverages and a little education on the side. Each drink is crafted with a story and each food item is filled with love and culture. If we can inform and educate people then we can open eyes and open minds to change the world. We can inspire and encourage people to be an do all that they can do. We want to change the world one cup at a time, one conversation at a time.
Our team consists of a husband and wife duo Jakyra and Catrice. Catrice is the brain behind the business and Jakyra is the strong support, together we are a powerhouse that looks forward to educating the people and giving back to the community. We are seeking funding to help start up the coffee shop. The funds will go towards equipment purchases, inventory, and working capital.
We would like to thank each and every person that has given to our campaign. Your generous gifts will make our dreams come true and our mission to help this country reverse the stereotypes and stigma of black people . We are forever grateful and we couldn't have done this without you wonderful gifts.
